It is nothing new that a writer or director will copy their own previously successful work to once again try to regain their notoraity. If it ain't broken; don't fix it. S orry, Jared Hess, Napoleon Dynamite was a one-hit wonder.
Gentlemen Broncos is a story about a kid (you remember Jack's kid from Will and Grace? Michael Angarano? Well, thats him) who is an aspiring science fiction writer. His hero, played by the great Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords throws a convention for kid writers across the state. Here, he meets a strange duo- a girl and her filmmaker friend (Héctor Jiménez, you know, the guy who played in Hess' Nacho Libre). Everybody says his film sucks. Then again, everybody wants a piece of it for their own.
Yes, we have seen this style before. Every character is awkward, no exceptions. Every character has a very shallow backstory, no exceptions. Every character has a spotlight of redemption where they, just for a brief moment of time, break through the mold, no exceptions. But then lo and behold everything works out for them with five minutes left in the film and everyone's happy.
Same structure, different story; same basic characters, different actors.... well, almost.
Personal Affect 2/5
We've all been in a situation where someone steals our work, whether literally or artistically. It is probably one of the most frustrating experiences. Your work is a part of you. You created it, you labored over it. You deserve to be recognized for it. I'm not sure if Gentlemen Broncos really tried at all to hit on this, but it brought me back to these feelings quite vividly.
Visuals 4/5
Ok, for a low budget film there were scenes in this that were not half bad, especially with the sci-fi clips. And not to give any spoilers, but I was fairly impressed with the editing of one scene in particular that included a gun fight. Kudos in this department.
Story 1/5
The one point is for the premise. As mentioned previously, the film fell apart in structure, character development, narration, flow, I could go on.
Overall 2.5/5
As you can see, I get frustrated when a good concept is bastardized.
