Lo (2009)

Love is Hell. Love is a tricky little devil. It has the power to command great sacrifice from those it touches.... Love is Hell, and Hell is funny.-- demonlo.com

After watching Lo for the third time, I believe my dedication warrants a blogged review.

Lo is the story of Justin, a guy heartbroken by the sudden loss of his girlfriend, April. The film opens up with Justin performing a ceremony to summon the demon Lo... the demon whom Justin believes kidnapped his beloved. If he must go to the gates of hell to retrieve his love, he will... and does.

Justin: A-a-are y-you t-the- Are you the demon, Lo?
Lo: [growls] I am that.
Justin: Y-you h-ha... Have great power?
Lo: This, I know.
[Summons then kills rat demon]
Lo: This, I know...
[laughs]
Lo: Now clean the shit from your pants and tell me what you want.

Though Travis Betz has much completed films and shorts in his resume, Lo establishes him in the significant independent film circles. Drexel Films and Travis Betz. Drexel Films seems to be notorious for their experimental filmmaking- Lo is no exception. Shot on an incredible budget, I am thoroughly impressed with the sheer imagination presented in this film. Not only is the flow of the story unconforming, the visuals speak just enough to give Lo the signature feel it needs to successfully brand itself into the heads of all whom experience it.

The viewer starts out not knowing what to expect. Directly off the start we watch Justin performing a ritual- ending in the shedding of his own blood. Shortly thereafter we are greeted with an unforgiving monologue- one which lays the track for the rest of the film. Don't get comfortable yet... there are plenty of surprises in store INCLUDING one of the greatest musical numbers yet to reach film to date.

Long after Lo is ended, the concepts and imagery will still be floating around in your head. Though not a satire by any means, you will find yourself attributively associating completely random occurrences to Lo. Things are never as they seem. With this being said- what are you willing to do about it? Even then, the humor in the film is one of a kind. It will give you the ammo to use a quote for every situation possible.

Jeez: You can't summon two demons at once! That's like trying to f**k two chicks with one d**k.

The movie steps beyond the mediums, delivering a website made with great care and FANTASTIC design. (Find it here) I am more than impressed with the way the typefaces and vector imagery work together to continue to tell the story of Lo, staying on point through the themes and concepts in the film.

I am always in search of the next best thing... a film that deserves to be brought to the light and receive the notoriety it deserves. Some believe this manner comes off as being pretentious, but I couldn't disagree more. I see myself as the guinea pig that will sift through hundreds of B movies just to find one jewel, such as Lo.

Beyond a doubt- Lo gets a 5/5
