The End of Lost is Nigh

Posted by DizzoMonkey Sunday, May 23, 2010

So I cannot lie, I am one of those people that got sucked in to this season of Lost, primarily because of the alluring attachment of "The Final Season" to the title of season 6. I am also blessed with a roommate that is absolutely addicted to Matthew Fox and his gang of castaways, villagers, pirates, gods, demons, monsters, unicorns, or whatever else is on that freaking island.

He claims that he has figured it out. He thinks that Jack is actually the devil, and we've been watching a new evil protector being picked out, challenged, and ordained this whole time. He also says that he knew that the island was Hell the whole time (then again Kevin Smith even said that in "Zach and Miri"), he claims that Rose and Bernard represent how good and evil (symbolic in their black and white skin colors) can exist happily together if they use their differences as a symbiotic relationship and not a constant battle. He nuts whenever someone who made a three episode arc in season 2 appears for a split second in a flash-sideways, but he's been wrong about Kate dying (every episode this season he says, "Kate's gonna die in this one!")

But I've had enough about talking Lost, I wanna approach the subject in more of a supportive role, as being the roommate to a Lost addict I will soon have to begin this process myself.

People attach themselves to a story, they meld themselves with the characters, often picking up inflections, mannerisms, and sometimes even their wardrobe (the roommate hasn't washed his dew rag in 6 seasons either). Each new show enhances our own personal character even more than we know. My roommate runs like the wind whenever he sees a puff of smoke or hears heavy breathing. But the important part is knowing that a show is just an entertainment venue, and there will always be other shows.

For me this epiphany first came to me with the cancellation of Blossom. Mayim Bialik's portrayal of sassy and confident Blossom Russo was a staple in the early years of my childhood, but it wasn't Mayim Bialik's career setback that disturbed me so much about the loss of Blossom (because as we all know, she's had an amazing career), it was the loss of such a useful vehicle for Joey Lawrence. Joey's lovable dumb jock character made the nation say "woah" together and we banded around him with great admiration. I was afraid that we'd never again see his signature hair flip, or hear his Asperger syndrome-esk musings. But then, thank God, Allah, Satan, Paul Reiser, and Buddah combined the next year we were blessed with Brotherly Love and we not only got our lovable dumb Joey character back, but we got two clones to boot!

So this is what I say to you my lost Lost fans. As you flip aimlessly through the DVR guide and look for a new show to ponder, pontificate, argue, and obsess over please remember that just when things are dimmest, things are being prepared for you in a place where all the light went. So whether this 2 1/2 finale reveals the island is actually a cosmic spider web and it takes off into space with rocket boosters, or Jack just wakes up in bed with Bob Newhart in the end and it all turns out to be a dream, please remember that to every Blossom there must be a Brotherly Love, it's the law of tv. Good characters don't die, cause the writers live on.

Peace..
