Moon (2009)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/
This has been quite the year for allegorical scifi. Luckily, Moon is no different.
Sam Bell (Rockwell) plays a man who's 3 year contract for harvesting clean energy off the moon is almost up. Soon, he will reunite with his wife and daughter, whom he has not seen since her infancy. The moon is a very lonely place to be, only being able to watch videos of people transmitted, cut away from all live communication. The only thing (yes, thing) he has to talk to is HAL... I mean Gurdy, his computer which is in charge of making everything as comfortable as possible for Sam.
Just days before he is set for departure, Sam makes a discovery that changes everything. He learns something about his mission and about himself.
RATINGS:
Personal Affect: 3/5
Moon got me to think... but only for about a minute after watching the film.
Visuals: 4/5
The filmmaking itself was heavily inspired by Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odessy. What intrigued me the most was the landscape of the Moon. It was all made using low-budget miniatures, giving a very vast, gorgeous appearance.
Story: 4/5
It felt like an elongated short story, but this I do not see in a negative light. The pacing was perfect to mimic the emotional affect of Sam Bell.
Overall: 4/5
It may not be on my list of best films of the year, as is many other's, but director Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie) provides for some easy entertainment for an hour and a half of your time.
