The Hangover (2009)

This is my first actual mainstream review to be published on the SDCT website. I realize statistics show most of you will be fans of The Hangover, therefore a good number of you will disagree with the scathing review to follow. Ok, I probably shouldn't call it a biased review just because I hated it so much.

The Hangover was a waste of time.

First, I will start by addressing what I found was good about this film.
1. The premise. I love mysteries where the protagonist(s) must decipher clues left in the past to discover the truth.
2. Ed Helmes. He played Stu Price aka Mr. Whipped. He was the only one with the least amount of background story that unfolded throughout the film; this, however, is not the reason that I like him. I like him for the single minute he is singing. The song he sang in The Hangover, he wrote and sang himself. Not the writers, Ed Helmes. I don't know much about him, but he belongs on Broadway. If he's already been there, cast him in a musical. Pull him out of The Office (this is big for me to say because it used to be my favorite show) and put him into something where he can shine through.

What I did not like:
1. The writers and they're amazing (sarcastic) job at writing this piece of work. Common, these guys did Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Four Christmases.
2. The plot. Ok, ok, I said I liked the premise. But the actual plot, what on earth was that? It did not flow together well at all and the one thing that kept me wondering was not addressed until actually DURING the end credits! The only form they have here came out of a textbook.
3. The humor. I guess I should be thankful at least there was not scat humor (toilet humor), but almost every joke, whether situational or a one-liner was made out of a sexual nature. Even Kevin Smith doesn't find the same humor over every situation.
4. The soundtrack. Normally this would never be a hindrence for me, but did they honestly spend more money on the soundtrack than they paid the actual actors? It sure sounds like it. Seriously, why'd they skimp out? They only spent 35 million on making it, however domestically it has made back close to 300 million.
5. Mel Brooks. Because he had nothing to do with this film, when only he could be its saving grace.
6. Everybody talking about how awesome it is. Seriously.

Ratings:
Personal Affect: 2/5

Visuals 3/5

Story: 1/5
